In his remarks to the UN Security Council during an emergency meeting in New York, António Guterres once more called for an end to the hostilities between troops loyal to Fatttah al-Burhan, the commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The UN head began his address by paying respect to all the Sudanese men, women, and children who have lost their lives or been injured since the faction fighting started. He then stated, “It is incumbent on Sudanese leaders to put the interests of their people front and centre.”
Mr. Guterres warned that seven countries border Sudan, all of which have experienced warfare or major civil upheaval in the previous ten years, and said it was “unbearable to contemplate” a protracted full-scale war.
He noted that hunger and poverty are already widespread over the entire region.
Four years after longtime tyrant Omar al-Bashir was overthrown by the people, in 2021 the generals staged a joint military coup, ending the flimsy and temporary civilian power-sharing arrangement that had been intended to usher Sudan into a new period of peace and civilian governance.
The two military factions were unable to come to an agreement on how to combine the SAF and RSF troops as negotiations moved following promising moves towards elections and a democratic future, which resulted in this month’s violence.
The Sudanese people, according to Mr. Guterres, “have made their preferences quite clear. He told ambassadors in New York, “They want democracy, peace, and the restoration of civilian control.
